EMaBS trial interventions

EMaBS is a registered clinical trial [ISRCTN32849447; Elliott et al., 2007]

The trial interventions were

  • albendazole (400mg) or placebo and praziquantel (40mg/kg) or placebo given once during the second or third trimester of pregnancy
  • albendazole (200mg if below two years of age, 400mg if two years or above) or placebo given quarterly to the children from age 15 months to one year

Albendazole is effective against roundworms, especially hookworm and Ascaris.  Praziquantel is effective against schistosomiasis (Bilharzia).
